Roger Bacon (1214-1294) was born at Ilchester, near Yeovil, where there is a commemorative tablet in the church [Eagle & Carnell, p. 139].
The Innerpeffray Library was the first free public lending library in Britain, founded in 1691 by David Drummond, third Lord Maddertie. Ruth Wallis gave an illustrated account of this library in BSHM Newsletter 33 (Spring 1997) 35-37.
Near Braemar, has an obelisk to John (or Johann von) Lamont (1805-1879), Astronomer Royal of Bavaria [Hatt, p. 113], who was born in Braemar.
c. 4 miles NE of Ipswich is the village of Playford: G. B. Airy (1801-1892) had a cottage and is buried in the churchyard. There is a bust of him.
