Workshop on Algorithmic Game Theory

DIMAP, University of Warwick, UK

March 25 - 28, 2007

Local Information

The workshop took place on the campus of the University of Warwick (online map of the campus and the pdf file with the map of the campus). Most of the participants used the accommodation on the university campus.

The workshop was held at the Centre for Discrete Mathematics and its Applications (DIMAP), in the building of the Warwick Mathematics Institute (number 35 on the maps of the campus). The registration was on Sunday, 9:00 - 10:00, in the building of the Warwick Mathematics Institute.

Lunches were served in the neighboring Department of Computer Science (number 13 on the maps of the campus).

Eating: there were only very limited possibilities to eat on Saturday on the campus. Therefore, we prepared a brief list of restaurants in nearby towns.

Accommodation:

A limited number of rooms in the Arthur Vick and Jack Martin residences (on the campus) have been reserved for participants in the workshop. Priority was given to invited speakers if they make reservations before February 15th. Further accommodation was available in standard student rooms on campus or in hotels off campus. Approximate charge per night for bed-and-breakfast in the residences was 57 UK pounds. Double-room accommodation was also available.

For those staying on the campus: After arrival, you will need to pick up the keys from Rootes Social Building Reception (building 47 on the campus map) from 3:00pm onwards on the day of your check in. If you're planning to arrive earlier then you should contact directly the Reception (phone number +44 24 7652 2280). You must check out at 9.30am on the day of departure. The accommodation includes breakfast which is served between 7.30 & 9.30 in the Rootes Restaurant which is on the first floor of the Rootes Social Building.

For those arriving late: Once the main reception has closed, security will see late arriving delegates to their rooms. There is a phone by the entrance of Rootes Social Building which has direct link to security should reception have closed.

There is free Internet access in the rooms - but it's advisable to bring your own Ethernet cable.

See the generic university document about more details.

Travel:

The following two links contain generic information about travel to/from the University of Warwick:

Make sure that you're travelling to the University of Warwick and NOT to Warwick - Warwick is a town a few miles away from the campus.

For those flying to the UK, we recommend, if possible, flying to Birmingham International Airport, which is less than half an hour's drive from the University. Typical time for travel from Heathrow Airport is about 2-2.5 hours, and typical travel time from Gatwick Airport is about 3-3.5 hours.

Trains

Generic university information about travelling by train to the campus is available at http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/about/visiting/directions/train/.

The nearest train station for the University is Coventry. There are frequent services between Coventry and major cities in the UK (but be aware that Sunday train services are typically very limited). Coventry Station is about 10 minutes from the campus by taxi and there are frequent local bus services (12/12A/U1) between Coventry Station and the University (bus stop is next to the station, 1 minute walk).

The UK rail schedule is available at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/, from which one can find details of train connections between Coventry and major airports (including Birmingham airport, and all London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, etc)).

Coaches

National Express coaches (http://www.nationalexpress.com/) seem more convenient if someone wants to go directly from/to the London airports and avoid traffic in London. They minimize the number of changes needed and go to/from Coventry Pool Meadow coach station 24/7. Coventry Pool Meadow coach station is about 10 minutes from the campus by taxi; public transportation (buses 12/12A/U1) between the campus and the coach station is also available.

Coaches depart frequently and tickets can be bought from the National Express desk in airports' Arrivals halls. If you plan to use this service, it is advisable to book your ticket in advance through the National Express web page, as the coaches can get very full. From central London or Heathrow to Coventry will take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, or 3 hours and 30 minutes from Gatwick.

Coaches vs. Trains

Comparing to the coaches, trains from/to London airports require more changes and don't go throughout the night, but may be preferable if someone wants to visit London before/after the workshop.

Travel to/from Birmingham International Airport

Birmingham International Airport is the closest major airport to the University.

For those willing to use public transportation to travel from Birmingham International Airport: take a train to Coventry and then take a bus (services 12/12A/U1) to the University of Warwick. The bus stop is next to the station (1 minute walk). The total price should be less than 10 UK pounds.

Taxis from Birmingham International Airport will take 20-30 minutes and should cost about 25-30 UK pounds. Taxis are available outside the terminal building.
