The best way to travel and see the country is by bike. Several times a year I make my way home or to uni by bike, and since I live in North Devon that is about 250 miles. Taking several days at a lesurely pace I get to see many places that you miss when speeding up the motorway, on my last trip I went via Porlock, Glastonbury, Wells and a small cotswold village called Bourton-on-the-Water.
Generally I don't stay at campsites as that would cost too much and isn't necessary. Often I am allowed to stay in pub gardens (but not always) or find some nice open and empty field. You get a chance to meet and chat with many other people who cannot quite believe or understand why I cycle so far.
Occasionally I go on longer trips, the most recent of which was to France from home with my sister. Unfortunately we did not complete the trip as my sister had to pull out and head home. The plan was to get to Geneva, go somewhere in the alps and then come home by train. Someday I plan to do this.
