I have been nominated to stand for election as a Full Member of the EATCS, and hence a member of the EATCS Council. If elected, I will promote the following actions at the Council.
- Shine a spotlight on
institutional innovation
in various corners of the EATCS research community and its close peers in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, and the Sciences, for example through a dedicated column in the BEATCS or an ICALP workshop. Imaginative new institutions (for example, a modified conference/workshop format, peer review process, hiring practice, or outreach and wider engagement activity) can invigorate and enrich our research and collaboration cultures. As Picasso quipped, good artists copy, great artists steal,
so let's keep our eyes wide open for what we can steal.
- Encourage a more visible and active sharing of best practice and perspectives on learning and teaching TCS. The immediate need for this arises from the practical challenges created by the breakthrough advances in ML. A longer-term opportunity for TCS may be to, using its theoretical insights on ML, follow L. Valiant's encouragement to illuminate the way towards elevating research on learning and education.
- Support our research community in making our conferences more sustainable, for example in line with the TCS4F Manifesto, of which I have been an early signatory. TCS conferences are our
critical infrastructure
, but with wise leadership and community engagement, we can and will innovate to make them both more sustainable and better serve the vitality, relevance, and impact of TCS.
- Improve social representation in the TCS research community, to attract talent and to prevent developing damaging blind spots.
- Consider new ways of funding EATCS. For example, if (by some miracle) a permanent endowment for (some of) the EATCS prestigious awards could be obtained, then membership fees could be reduced. This could help promote widening EATCS membership, so that it can better represent our whole community. Miracles cannot be promised, but what if CS is in a pole position to secure such independent funding?
If you wish to discuss any of the above with me in more detail, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
